Camberley Rotary Club are successfully piloting a new Junior Community Award Scheme with two of its local schools.
The purpose of the Award is to give young people at the beginning of their adolescence the opportunity to involve themselves in a positive way in their community, acquiring new skills and abilities that will benefit both themselves and others around them.

Impact of the Award on children

  • They will have discovered their community and its vast range of cultures and opportunities - on their door step.
  • They will learn new skills and improve their physical, mental, emotional health.
  • They will have greater self-confidence and amongst them could be the leaders of the future.
  • Those gaining the Award will become the pro-social volunteers of the future.

The Rotary Junior Community Award Scheme is open to all Clubs across 1145 District.

The Award will deepen Rotary’s relationships with local schools through addressing social cohesion amongst the young which is a high profile issue – so the award is a very timely, proactive service to engage with Head Teachers in your area.
Offering schools the tools to engage with the children often missing out on opportunities to join clubs and community activities.

Rotarians can use their special links across the local community to help schools and pupils access local community resources and contacts.

The Award complements the existing Rotary Youth offerings but is tightly focussed on 10 to 11 year olds.

Award mechanics

The Award is open to all 10/11 years olds, a time of great change in their lives.
Nominations to take part are driven by the school ensuring that children from disadvantaged families are properly included.

The Award is best introduced to participants in term 3 of Year 5 so planning can occur for a prompt start in Year 6. However schools can adapt the time frame and delivery to suit their school.

When the children complete the Award there will be a celebration fully supported by the local Rotary Club in which certificates and badges should be given formally by an invited guest of note.

The Award scheme comes with a handbook to support the Rotary Club and participating schools and pre-printed Diaries for Award entrants to record their years activities.

The District is the Governing body of the Award administered by the local Rotary Club..

The overall cost per child will be less than £7.00 for the sponsoring Rotary Club to fund.
